Brewing Methods

A Guide to
Home Brewing

by Hotbox Roasters

Best for: Camping, coffee for a crowd,
a headier cup

Bean to brew time: 7 minutes
Yield: 32oz using an 8-cup French press

What you will need: French press, grinder,
54g (8-10 tablespoons) coffee, hot
filtered water (about 205°F),scale, timer,
spoon, your favorite mug

Let's make coffee!

1. Before you do anything, make sure your equipment
is clean. Any leftover grinds in the mesh filter will make
for a funky cup of coffee.

2. Boil water in kettle to 205°F and let sit for 30 seconds.

3. To heat up your press, fill about one-quarter full with
water and press

plunger all the way down. Swirl the hot water around
for about 10 seconds, then pull the plunger up and
remove the lid. Discard the rinse water.

4. Grind your beans on a course setting and pour into
the French press.

5. Bloom time. Pour about half of your hot water evenly
over the grounds.

You will notice an expansion of the coffee and delightful
aromas. During the bloom, a thick “crust” of coffee
grounds will form. Start your timer once you’ve finished pouring.

6. Once your timer hits 30 seconds, stir the coffee gently for 5 seconds
to break up the crust and mix the grounds evenly with the water.

7. Pour the remaining half hot water over the coffee. Place the lid
on your French press with the plunger pulled all the way up.
Let the coffee steep until your timer reads 4:00.

8. At the 4-minute mark, slowly press the plunger down all the way
to the grounds. Pour yourself a cup of coffee right away and enjoy!

Best for: When you just need a cup.

if you have not already. Add coffee to aero press chamber.
2. Next, start timer and add 30g water to coffee for a count for 30 seconds
and give your grounds a gentle stir.
3. Add remaining H2O by 1:00
4. Securely twist cap with filter onto your Aeropress.
5. Place mouth of your mug onto Aeropress and simultaneously flip
so the plunger is now upright.

7. Enjoy!
